HomeLab

As a passionate IT professional, my HomeLab has become a playground for experimentation and experience. Before I started my HomeLab journey, all I had was an eight port unmanaged switch and a Google Nest Wifi pod. Now, my network is home to five production Proxmox servers, hosting everything from my next generation firewall in the form of OPNsense with Zenarmor, to this very website which is hosted with Apache HTTP Server. I have had the opportunity to traverse some unusual barriers due to the tight budget and networking entirely behind a CG-NAT with T-Mobile Home Internet. These barriers allowed me to come up with creative solutions, including:

• Multiple Cloudflare Tunnels to allow public facing services, for instance my Home Assistant and this very website
• Port Forwarding VPNs with Ddclient to establish fileshares and media servers, where more bandwidth is required.
• Leveraging services, such as Tailscale for managment of network resources and site-to-site connections.

I designed my home network from the ground up to be secure and efficient. With just over 20TB of critical storage including family photos, videos and documents along with over 80 devices, security is taken seriously. Some of the steps I have teken to secure my network include:

• Over 8 VLANs, all of which have different ACLs and purposes.
• RADIUS authentication server to allow users to access network resourses with individual accounts.
• Ad, tracker, Spam and Dangerous website blocklists using Zenarmor and UnboundDNS.
• For certian VLANs, MAC whitelists and strict ACLs specifically for lagecy devices on Enhanced Open Wifi.
